Reunion 2005 was held
|
| The delightful city of Nashville,
the city of country music, was the site of the 2005 reunion for the
crewmembers of the USS Pursuit. Our Chairman, George Rose, guided us
through 3 days of musical events, musical history and good old southern
atmosphere. We arrived at various times on Thursday at the Millennium
Maxwell House (this was a hotel, not a coffee shop) where our accommodations
were excellent. Although we shared the hotel with a large group of US Army
medical reservists, there was plenty of room for all. One of the
outstanding features of the hotel was there continuous shuttle service, not
only to the airport but anywhere in town at almost any time. Even the
people with cars used the shuttle (no place to park in town). On Friday morning, we had our first adventure with our voyage on a river paddleboat that served us a great lunch and then entertained us with a lively country music stage show. After the show, we enjoyed the sights of the Cumberland River shoreline including a great view of Nashville, while listening to a Dixieland Band playing out on deck. I am happy to report that none of our crew got seasick (which sometimes happens on these river cruises). After the cruise, we hurried to Maxwell House to get ready for the second major event of the day, a show at the “Grand Ole Opry”. Although the place was huge, George got us good seats. We wound up being the live audience for the taping of six, half hour radio shows. I must say the commercials were interesting even though I never heard of most of the stuff and I surely can’t buy it in California. There was a continuous flow of real country music that was great. On Saturday morning, we went on our “City Tour” with one of the most knowledgeable tour guides I have ever seen. Although she was born in Canada and came to Nashville a few years ago, she knew something about every nook and cranny in town. We started with a large park that had a copy of the Roman Pantheon temple, then on to millionaires’ row where all the music stars live in large mansions. Our guide seemed to know them all. After that we drove back to town to navigate the street that houses all the recording studios. Our guide highlighted the most important ones with some interesting stories. We then drove past the Nightclubs (all with live entertainment) on to the Tennessee Monument where we took a lot of pictures. Saturday night we had our Banquet and it was a very elegant dinner. We did our business meeting and selected San Diego for 2006 and Omaha for 2007 (see the meeting minutes). George Rose was given a standing ovation for the fine work he did setting us up in Nashville. As always, our hospitality room was in continual use. One of this years feature’s was a slide show on the television of previous reunion pictures and many pictures Joe Venovich took while on duty on the Pursuit in the late 50’s. |
