It was time to take the “old salts” of the USS pursuit back to the sea for a few days of remembering. However this time, it would be on a luxurious, top of the line cruise ship that sails through the seas with almost no motion (during the 5 days, I think I noticed a two degree roll and that was it) and all the delights of modern civilian life.

The sailors on this trip were: Eldon & Betty Pontious, Robert Milligan & Mary Donohue, John & Dorothy McCarthy, Roger & Virginia Cortivo,Sr., Thomas & Marie Allore, Dean & Mary Ickes, James Gifford & Joyce Delancey, James & Jean Jack, John (Pink) & Colleen Miller, John & Kathleen Schulz and Robert & Virginia Ciereck.

We all had very nice staterooms with outlooks to the ocean even though we did not spend much time in them (my television was on for about 5 minutes during the whole trip).

The ship provided a daily “Plan of the Day” that required about a 48 hour day to participate in all the activities, so everyone had to “pick and choose” the things they really wanted to do.  I can tell you the favorites were: Dinner every night, the Top of the Line Show every night from 2100 to 2200 and for many, the Casino (which I and a couple of others closed every night).

We boarded on Monday, 9/18, at 1300 and somehow all gravitated to our Hospitality Suite on deck 7 and had a impromptu gathering until we got word to go below to get lifejackets for the “all hands” lifeboat drill which we did dockside.

Underway at 1700 for the high seas (smooth as glass). Shipboard routine started at 1730 with a gourmet dinner (they all were). We all sat together and reminisced and ate until they asked us to leave at 1930 because the next group for dinner needed our tables.

Then on to the show and then after the show either the casino or one of the many lounges with music of all kinds.

At 0800 sharp we docked in San Diego for the day. Many went on tours, many went on board the USS Midway, which was docked at the pier next to us and many enjoyed the comforts and food on the ship. We sailed again at 1700 and started the festivities of the evening.

At 0800 sharp we anchored off the town of Avalon on Catalina Island and got ferried into town (there was no pier big enough for our ship). Again some took tours, some enjoyed the town and some enjoyed the ship. The ship sailed at 1700 and we started the evening routine ( of dining, floor shows, gambling, dancing and enjoying the smooth sea ). This is the night, I think I felt a 1 to 2 degree roll which some passengers thought was frightening.

At 0800 sharp we docked in Ensenada, Mexico for a pleasant taste of Mexican food, tours of the town and a very well done, native Mexican dancing show in the cities social building. Although time was short, we managed to buy a lot of stuff to take home (probably because we had some “black belt” shoppers with us). Underway at 1700 for the activities on board ship. The USS Pursuit Reunion Association had its business meeting from 1930 (when they tossed us out of the dining room) till 2100 (at which time the big show started) where we conducted the business of the Association (see the meeting minutes on the website).

At 0800 on Friday (9/22) we docked back in Long Beach and wished each other a safe journey back home.

I can honestly report, ALL HANDS had a very joyous and rewarding reunion.

John Schulz, President/Secretary

USS Pursuit  AM108 / AGS17
 Minutes of 2006 Reunion
On Board the Monarch of the Seas, Long Beach, CA

The annual reunion of the of the USS Pursuit crewmembers and spouses was held on board the Monarch of the Seas cruise ship, out of Long Beach, CA on September 18 to 22, 2006.

Meeting called to order by Secretary, John Schulz. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jean Jack after which Jean sang the Star Spangled Banner.  Chairman John Schulz welcomed the group and summarized the events of the reunion.

Secretary Schulz read the obituary of one of our steadfast reunion participants, John Hillock, who was a USS Pursuit plankowner on the AM 108.

Secretary Schulz opened the business meeting with a review of the minutes of the last meeting which were approved as written.

John Schulz was provided a verbal financial report by Joe Venovich indicating that the Association is solvent.  Historian Bob Ciereck reported he had a great deal of historical information that could not be brought because of cruise limitations.  There was no Publicity report.

Based on a proposal made by Tom Knapp and accepted by the members at the 2002 reunion to plan the locations of the reunions two years ahead, it was required to select locations for 2007 and 2008.

The location selected at the 2005 reunion for 2007, was the city of Omaha, Nebraska. Joe Venovich volunteered to organize the meeting in Omaha.

Secretary Schulz proposed a new method to select a reunion location for 2008 as follows:

The attendees of the 2006 business meeting would propose locations for the 2008 reunion

Secretary Schulz would then compare the list with the roster to see if shipmates lived nearby the proposed locations. He would make personal contact to see if a sponsor for that location would volunteer.

The locations suggested are: San Francisco, CA; Branson, MO; Atlantic City, NJ; Boston, MA; New London, CT; Norfolk VA; Baltimore MD; Las Vegas NV.

If any shipmate would like to sponsor a reunion in any of these cities, please call John Schulz. Remember any reunion organizer would get full clerical support (including website) from John and Kathy Schulz.

The floor was then opened for nominations and voting for the 2007 Officers:

Joe Venovich nominated for Chairman
John Schulz nominated for Secretary

Joe Venovich nominated for Treasurer
James Jack nominated for Publicity Chairman
Malcolm Milligan nominated for Historian
Bob Ciereck nominated as Official Photographer

All were voted into office by the members..

New Business:
Tom Allore felt a number of shipmates that he knew were not on the roster as either Active, Lost (L) or Deceased (D). He provided Schulz a list of names we need to find. They are: Smoliski, Gosski, Mills, Mims, Millard, Dial, Geng, Morgan, Byeio, Blicki.

If anyone is aware of the location of any of these shipmates, please contact John Schulz.

It was suggested we do more communicating using e-mails whenever possible.  Many of the e-mails in the roster have been changed or eliminated.  It was requested that future newsletters request e-mail addresses from all members so the roster can be updated.

Door prizes were then drawn. Two door prizes that were arranged by Joe Venovich were provided. These were American flags that had been flown over the Capital for the Pursuit. All attendees were eligible and the two winners were most happy with their flags.

Motion to adjourn. Motion Carried.

 Respectfully, John Schulz, Secretary  09/26/06
